THE BITTERSWEET END
by Colleen Rempel
It is the last and final day in Trujillo, Peru and it is truly a bitter-sweet end. Although most of us are excited to see family and friends and we are busting with stories to tell all the people at home, I am not sure if we are ready to leave Peru where God's voice seems so clear and serving comes so easily.
This morning, we were told that we were going to teach english at the Larco Alliance Church that acts as a school during the week. But yet again, the schedule changed when we got there. The "english lesson" turned into an opportunity to share our testimonies to the students and for Graham to give a talk on relationships. It seems like the Christians here are so eager to hear stories of our experience with God. One of the first questions that we are asked when we have met someone new is "How long have you been a Christian?" Then they go on to ask us to share our story. This is a new way of looking at our faith for most of us and has encouraged us to be more open with our love story with the Creator.
After the "english lesson" at Larco, we had our last lunch at America Sur Alliance church. It is a strange feeling to experience all of our lasts- last working day, last bus rides, last lunches here, last night in these beds. In this short week and a half, the guest house has become sort of like home.
This afternoon we went to a market in Trujillo. I guess it was sort of like a mall because it was a bunch of booths all placed close together in a building. But there is no way I would enjoy shopping if our malls at home worked like the market here. All of the booths were clumped together by what they sold. There were rows on rows of shoes, then backpacks, then kids' toys. It was slightly overwhelming and we spent our 45 mins mostly just walking around, looking in the booths, and just generally watching the culture revolve around us. I was relieved when it was time to get back on the bus and go back to the guest house for our last few hours of hanging out.
This has been a good last day here in Trujillo. Through our debrief tonight, it is clear that God has used this trip to speak to each person individually. No two people had the same experience or learned the same things. We started this week with overcast skies that seemed to engulf the city but today, God blessed us again with a sunny afternoon. This is kind of a symbol of what I have learned. Going into this trip, God's voice seemed to be cloudy and far away but now leaving Peru, I can hear and see what he had in mind to show me and the clarity has come with great joy, the same as a bright sunny day.
We are excited to share with you all the things we have learned. Thank you for your prayers throughout this trip! See you soon!
